THE MIGHTY MOB
A FIRST NATIONS SUPERHERO STORY
The Mighty Mob is Karul Projects new large-scale dance-theatre work: a bold, high-energy celebration of First Nations strength, visibility, and self-determination. Drawing inspiration from the world of superheroes, the work asks: who are our heroes, and what does survival look like for First Nations people in a society not built with us in mind?
Blending humour, physical theatre, dance, and cinematic-style design, The Mighty Mob builds a new mythology of First Nations superheroes; figures who confront modern-day villains such as assimilation, cultural erasure, and systemic racism. Central to the story is a villain who is not evil but human: a man who wants to solve a broken society by assimilating into it. His plan is misguided, but his motivation is survival - a reflection of the reality many First Nations people face when navigating systems never built for us. Through this character, the work explores the tension between survival and self-determination, and the resilience it takes to remain authentically Blak in a world that often demands otherwise.
